What's actually driving EV depreciation right now
Three things compound:
New EV pricing has dropped sharply
Tesla cut Model 3 and Y prices several times since 2023. Used Tesla values track new Tesla prices closely.
The federal $7,500 used EV tax credit creates a price ceiling
A used EV over $25,000 doesn't qualify for the credit, which depresses prices around that threshold.
Battery health concerns vary by buyer
Sophisticated buyers want battery health reports. Less-sophisticated buyers price in fear of degradation, depressing offers further.
This means EV resale values are unusually volatile and unusually buyer-segment-dependent. Two buyers can give you very different offers on the same EV based on which segment they serve.
How we evaluate EVs
Same five inputs as any vehicle (auction, reconditioning, exit channel, CPO if applicable, margin), but with two EV-specific factors:
Battery health (state of health, or SOH)
For Teslas, we look at the battery state of health (accessible via service mode or via the vehicle's diagnostic). 90%+ SOH is healthy; 80–90% is normal for a 4-5-year-old vehicle; below 80% is meaningful degradation that affects offer.
For Ford Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, ID.4, Bolt, etc., we look at OBD-II diagnostic data and any available battery health reports.
If you don't have a battery health report, we run our own check at appraisal. Don't worry if you don't have one upfront.
CPO eligibility
This matters more than people realize. Tesla doesn't have a CPO program at non-Tesla dealers. Ford CPO covers the Lightning at Ford franchises (we have Westlie Ford and Bud Clary Ford in Longview). Subaru CPO doesn't yet cover Solterra at most franchises. Hyundai CPO covers Ioniq 5 at Hyundai franchises (we have those).
What this means: if your EV is one we can certify at our network's franchises, the offer is usually meaningfully higher than what a non-franchise EV buyer can pay.
Model-specific notes
Tesla
(Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X)Highest volume in the PNW market. Resale fundamentals are tied to new-Tesla pricing. Battery state of health matters; Autopilot/FSD package status matters. We buy them; we route them to wholesale or to specific stores depending on volume.
Ford
(Lightning, Mustang Mach-E)We have Ford franchises (Westlie Ford in Washougal, Bud Clary Ford in Longview). Ford CPO covers these. The CPO premium typically makes our offer competitive or higher than wholesale-only buyers like Carvana.
Volkswagen
(ID.4)We have VW capability through our network. ID.4 resale is heavily depressed right now (federal tax credit dynamics). Our offer reflects market reality, but the premium for our exit network is real.
Chevrolet
(Bolt)Recall and battery replacement situations affect Bolt resale heavily. If the battery has been replaced under recall, that's actually a positive (newer pack, fresh warranty). Bring the recall paperwork.
Hyundai / Kia
(Ioniq 5, EV6)We have Hyundai capability through our network. Ioniq 5 has held up reasonably well in PNW resale. Standard CPO process applies if eligible.
Ford F-150 Lightning
(Work truck segment)The Lightning has its own market dynamic — work-truck buyers don't want EVs, recreational buyers want range. Pricing has compressed. We buy them. The Ford CPO availability at Westlie Ford specifically makes our offer competitive on these.
What you bring to an EV appraisal
- The vehicle's battery health report if you have one (Tesla service mode, Ford FordPass app, etc.)
- Charging history (if available; some apps record this)
- Any tax credit claim history (relevant for next-buyer tax planning)
- Wall charger if you're including it (real value-add for the next buyer)
- Both keys/cards
- Service records

EV offers are sometimes higher than you'd expect (when CPO is available) and sometimes lower (when the segment is depressed). We give you a real number to compare against private-party and other buyers.
